Obsidian Athletic Club is coming to Kelowna, and the build is already underway at 2020 Harvey Avenue, the old Toys R Us building on Harvey. The ARG Contracting crew are on the job, and before anything goes up, a lot had to come out.
Phase 1: Excavating and removing buried infrastructure that had no place in a modern build
Old retail buildings carry history you can’t always see until you start digging. Under the slab at this site, the team found pipes and decommissioned electrical left over from when the building was a grocery store, long before Toys R Us ever moved in. None of it was up to current standards, so the whole thing had to be removed before the build could move forward properly.
Phase 1 involved slab work: cut, excavate, strip out the old infrastructure, backfill the trenches, and pull down outdated lighting and electrical overhead. It’s the kind of work that doesn’t make for the most exciting footage, but getting it right here is what makes every phase after it clean and straightforward.
Adam brought the same detail-first approach that goes into ARG’s custom residential builds into this commercial project; for him, the scale is different, but the standard isn’t. Add the fact that he’s personally into fitness, and this one’s a good job to be on.
Stay tuned for what’s coming next
With the slab reinstated, the team moves overhead. Electrical and plumbing rough-in are up next, and once those systems are framed in and inspected, the walls start going up, and the space starts to actually read as a building: rooms, corridors, the bones of a 25,000 sq ft athletic club taking shape.
