Obsidian Athletic Club is coming to Kelowna, and the build is already underway at 2020 Harvey Avenue, the old Toys R Us building on Harvey. The ARG Contracting crew are on the job, continue reading below to see how we got here, or jump to the latest Phase 3 update.

Phase 1: Clearing Out the Old Infrastructure

Old retail buildings carry history you can’t always see until you start digging. Under the slab at this site, the team found pipes and decommissioned electrical left over from when the building was a grocery store, long before Toys R Us ever moved in. None of it was up to current standards, so the whole thing had to be removed before the build could move forward properly. It’s the kind of work that doesn’t make for the most exciting footage, but getting it right here is what makes every phase after it clean and straightforward.

Adam brought the same detail-first approach that goes into ARG’s custom residential builds into this commercial project; for him, the scale is different, but the standard isn’t. Add the fact that he’s personally into fitness, and this one’s a good job to be on.

Phase 2: Framing, Wiring and Plumbing

This is the stage where things finally start to come together. As the framers move through the space, the electrical and plumbing trades follow through to run wiring and pipes through the walls before they’re closed up.

The community response has been hard to miss. People come to the door every day asking when it’s going to open, and the crew is just as excited to watch it come up from the ground. As Adam puts it, “Apparently Kelowna needs another gym, and they’re going to get a great one.”

Phase 3: Drywall and Finishes Arriving

We’re getting close to the finishing stages with this exciting commercial build. Most of the framing and drywall is up, and electrical and plumbing rough-ins are moving along. Framing is expected to wrap next week, with drywall following shortly after.

The finishes are already arriving on site. The lockers are here, a bunch of the cabinets have shown up, and the flooring is set to start arriving next week. Next comes paint, then cabinets, flooring, desks, lockers and millwork going in. With most of the bulk work done, this is where the architectural design comes together, and the vision for the space really starts to show.

More updates to come as each phase wraps. If you want to get ahead of the opening, sign up for membership updates directly through Obsidian.
